Description
The first services were held at what was then known as Broadway Baptist Church, at 5906 Broadway, at 2:30PM Sunday December 9, 1928. L.E. Gates was pastor. The church was organized March 18, 1928, in the auditorium of Alamo Heights High School with 9 members. The original name of the church was Alamo Heights Baptist Church but was later changed to Broadway Baptist Church. This was due to the confusion the name brought about with Alamo Baptist Church, which was located downtown. Later Alamo Baptist Church moved and changed its name, so Broadway Baptist Church once again became Alamo Heights Baptist Church and has been so since the end of 1931.
In 1948 the church moved from its first location near Cambridge Circle to its present location. If you remember the Mule Stall, which sat behind the present Alamo Heights High School, well, that was the original church building, built in 1930. That building was either sold or given to the school district and was then moved behind the current high school. The old Mule Stall was torn down about five years ago. Alamo Heights Baptist Church has been at 6501 Broadway since 1948.
